XAT Test Exam Syllabus and Pattern

Xavier Aptitude Test, XAT 2020 Exam test Pattern and Syllabus cover the topics from which questions are being asked in the XAT Exam. XAT exam is divided into two parts.

  • Part 1 is of 165 minutes and covers the following:
  1. Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension: 26 Questions
  2. Decision Making: 21 Questions
  3. Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation: 27 Questions
  • Part 2 is of 15 minutes and comprises of 25 General Knowledge Questions.

Only part 1 is used to calculate XAT percentile, and part 2 of the exam is used in the further stages of the admission process.
XAT exam test pattern and syllabus is unique as compared to other MBA exams in India. XAT exam has a different section “Decision Making”, which makes it more challenging. Also, there are two types of negative marking in the XAT exam. For each correct answer, +1 marks are awarded. For each incorrect answer -0.25 marks are deducted and also -0.10 are deducted per each wrong question left un-attempted. There is no negative marking in the General Knowledge Section.

There are overall four sections in the XAT Exam, which are divided into two parts

Total questions: 74
Time Allotted: 165 mins, with no sectional time limit that is, any section can be attempted at any point of time during part 1 of the XAT exam
Marking Scheme: +1 for each correct response
Negative Marking: -0.25 for each incorrect response and -0.10 marks for each un-attempted questions beyond 8 questions. Negative marks for un-attempted questions are deducted equally among all three sections of part 1.

Key Points:

  • Weightage of RC passage is more, so one should practice this section more. Based on past years, analysis XAT has a habit of asking poems as reading comprehension. It is advised to be prepared for the poem based RC. Try to solve past XAT papers for better understanding.
  • RC from any topic can come, some of the major topics can be Philosophy, science and technology, Politics, History etc.
  • Generally, RC questions are inference based and authors point of view based. Critical reasoning skills play a significant role in solving such kind of questions.

XAT Decision Making Syllabus

Total Questions: 21

  • Analytical Reasoning
  • Situational Case-based Reasoning
  • Critical Reasoning, Inference, conclusion etc. questions 
  • Assumptions, Strong and Weak Arguments
  • Data arrangement sets

    Key Points:

  • Decision-making section is a different section to the XAT exam and required additional preparation.
  • The practice is the key to excel in the Decision Making Section. It is advised to practice all XAT Decision Making previous year papers to get comfortable in this section.

XAT Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation Syllabus

Total Questions: 27

  • Since this section is standard in many MBA entrance examination, so one can prepare a lot for this section.
  • The topic that one must cover includes:

  7. Time Speed and Distance

• In the case of Data Interpretation problems, one must try to understand how data can be represented using various methods such as a table, pie-charts, scatter plots.
